Medical Student Elective
The Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology offers the following electives for medical students during the 2009-2010 academic year:
General Dermatology Elective (Course #03-01):
During the elective, the student will be exposed to the many aspects of dermatologic diagnosis and treatment by actively participating in the ambulatory and inpatient programs. The elective is conducted in all three departmental services: The Charles C. Harris Skin and Cancer Unit at Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital Medical Center and the New York Harbor Healthcare System-Manhattan Veterans Administration Hospital. There is an in-depth lecture series and teaching conferences daily. At the end of the general dermatology elective, students will be able to properly perform a history and physical examination of patients with skin diseases, recognize and treat common skin conditions, and determining when it is appropriate to refer patients to Dermatologists or other specialists and skin morphology will be used as a method to generate a differential diagnosis.
Dermatology Research Elective (Course #03-02):
The Student is expected to identify a Departmental Faculty member who will mentor them to develop a research plan. Research activities can be either basic or clinical. It is the intent of the elective that the student will develop a research design, recognizing the literature leading up to the questions asked in their study, or in the event of working on an already initiated ongoing project, fully understand the above mentioned background and defining their specific role in the investigative activity.
