Dermatology Residency

Alexandra Flamm - Residency Director

Alexandra Flamm, MD

Residency Director

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Dermatology Residency builds on the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology’s mission to train future dermatologists and other physicians to deliver the highest-quality patient care and extend the clinical and basic science boundaries of medicine.

Our three-year program is nationally and internationally recognized as a vital contributor to the field of dermatology, and our department counts among its faculty members and graduates many of the field’s leaders. Residents in our program rotate in locations servicing diverse patient populations: NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, all located adjacent to one another on First Avenue in Manhattan. Our dermatology educational curriculum is structured to provide the skills needed to pursue lifelong learning in dermatology.

We look forward to hearing from you and answering any questions you may have.

Program Mission Statement

Our program’s mission directly aligns with that of the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology as well as of NYU Langone Health as a high reliability organization providing world-class, patient-centered care. As part of our mission, our goals are to:

  • produce outstanding dermatologists who can render the highest quality of care to a diverse patient population across multiple health care settings.
  • provide an exceptional education to trainees in the principles of diagnosis and management of skin disease in patients of all ages, including dermatologic surgery skills and dermatopathology interpretive knowledge.
  • train dermatologists who will extend the clinical and basic science boundaries of medicine and serve as leaders within medicine.

Dermatology Residency Clinical Training

Our residency program is designed to ensure that residents achieve mastery in medical and surgical dermatology so that they can deliver the highest-quality care to patients with skin diseases.

Residents rotate through ambulatory clinics and inpatient consultation services at three different locations: Tisch Hospital, Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Each resident is on a team made up of residents from all three years of training. The team spends four months at each hospital before rotating to the next training site.

Our rotational system affords residents exposure to a broad spectrum of dermatologic patients and diseases. It also allows for continuity of care, as you see your own follow-up patients at each site, as well as in a weekly continuity clinic at one of the three teaching sites. Our residency fosters camaraderie and nurtures the development of team players.

To complement our residents’ clinical education, they also rotate through the consultative practices of faculty members focused on various facets of medical and procedural dermatology.

Skin and Cancer Unit

Residents rotate in the following specialty outpatient clinics at the Skin and Cancer Unit, our dermatology teaching center located at NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street:

  • acne
  • bullous diseases
  • complex medical dermatology
  • congenital skin disorders
  • connective tissue diseases and skin lupus
  • contact dermatitis
  • cutaneous lymphoma
  • leg ulcers
  • pediatric and adolescent dermatology
  • photomedicine

Our residents also rotate in the phototherapy, pigmented lesion, psoriasis, and surgery and procedures clinics.

Kristen Lo Sicco, MD, is the medical director of the Skin and Cancer Unit.

NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue

Bellevue, one of the oldest public hospitals in the United States and one of the largest public hospitals in the world, has played a historic role in the emergence of dermatology as a specialty. Bellevue was the first institution in the city to respond to the challenges of epidemics of syphilis, measles, and other infectious diseases. The hospital squarely met the AIDS epidemic by creating the first dermatology clinic for the care of HIV patients in the country.

Residents rotate in the following clinics at Bellevue:

  • connective tissue disease
  • contact dermatitis
  • dermatologic surgery
  • hair
  • Hansen’s disease
  • lymphoma
  • medical dermatology
  • nail clinic
  • pediatric dermatology
  • phototherapy
  • prison (forensic) health
  • procedural dermatology
  • sarcoid and granulomatous diseases

You also rotate in the sexually transmitted diseases, skin of color, vulvar and women’s health–related skin diseases, and wound healing and skin ulcer clinics.

Miriam K. Pomeranz, MD, is the chief of dermatology services at Bellevue.

VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan Campus

At the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, our house staff work closely with faculty members who are clinical experts in their medical and procedural subspecialties. The active ambulatory care system provides a superb venue for residents to learn outpatient dermatology, and you treat patients with a diverse range of clinical pathology.

Residents rotate in the following clinics at the Manhattan campus:

  • cutaneous lymphoma
  • dermatologic surgery
  • general medical dermatology
  • laser
  • leg ulcer
  • patch testing
  • photodynamic therapy
  • pigmented lesion and dermatoscopy
  • psoriasis

Jo-Ann M. Latkowski, MD, is the chief of dermatology at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

Dermatology Residency Application

Applicants must be graduates of a medical school in the United States accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); an accredited medical school in Canada; or an accredited osteopathic school in the United States. If you are a graduate of an international medical school, you must possess the standard certificate of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Your postgraduate year one (PGY-1) must consist of 12 months of clinical training in one of the following types of programs in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or a similar program in Canada accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada:

  • a transitional year (formerly called flexible first postgraduate year) or
  • a first-year residency in emergency medicine, family medicine, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, or preliminary year

These are the only approved PGY-1 internships that the American Board of Dermatology accepts before residents begin their Dermatology Residency. Rare exceptions may be granted after review of an individual’s PGY-1 training schedule. Any application for exception must be made by the program director, and formal approval by the American Board of Dermatology must be received before the candidate can be accepted into a dermatology residency program.

Our residency program includes rotations through the ambulatory clinics and inpatient services at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. All male applicants are encouraged to register with the Selective Service System before applying for the program and are required to be registered upon acceptance into the program.

We accept residency program applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Please also view pertinent application requirements information from ERAS. Though it is not a requirement, we strongly encourage you to fill out the supplemental application.

Please note that NYU Langone's Office of Graduate Medical Education does not allow for hiring of resident physicians with visas, with the exception of J1 visas.
