The laboratories of the Cutaneous Biology Program within the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology are located on the 4th floor of the state-of-the-art Joan and Joel Smilow Translational Research Center and in newly-renovated space on the 3rd floor of Tisch Hospital.

Smilow Central Supply

NYU Langone Medical Center offers freezer and lab supply stocking programs from a variety of vendors including Fisher, Promega, and Denville. Items stocked range from pipette tips to enzymes. Media and reagent stocks (agar, 10X PBS, etc) are also available. All items must be signed out in accordance with the facility rules.

Department of Dermatology’s Shared Equipment Laboratory

The laboratories of the Cutaneous Biology Program are accessible only to investigators within the Department of Dermatology. For security reasons, proper ID must be worn at all times. Elise Kelman is the Department Research Administrator and can be reached at (212) 263-9073 or elise.kelman@nyumc.org for more information. All laboratory staff are required to be knowledgeable about NYU policies and procedures and when appropriate, some staff are trained specifically in the use of the tissue culture, PCR and microscope facilities.

Facts about our Laboratory

  • There are three common tissue culture rooms with humidified CO2 (5%) incubators available for investigators performing experiments with live cells
  • Reservations are required for use of the fluorescence microscope, tissue culture hoods, and multi-mode Plate Reader
  • A pre-PCR room equipped with a dead-air isolation box is available
  • All computers require you to log in to the Dermatology Server to use with the exception of the microscope imaging computer and the multi-mode plate reader
  • The imaging system computers (gel documentation and microscope) are equipped with CD burners
  • All computers attached to equipment have USB ports
  • You may not store your data on any of the hard drives within the Laboratory. All computers are either networked or have USB ports, therefore there should be no data on any computer
  • No food or drink is allowed
  • Sharing of access codes is not allowed

Other Information

  • GE Typhoon Phosphoimager and X-omats are available within Smilow
  • Confocal microscope is available through the Department of Cell Biology and extended to NYU faculty with secondary appointments within the Department of Cell Biology on a pay per use or flat rate basis
